Fade-Out
Judith Weinshall Liberman
The FADE-OUT series of acrylic paintings was created in 2022, when I was 93 years old. After publishing numerous books over a period of many years, including ten books of sonnets in 2021, I felt the need to get back to painting.
First I created a series of acrylic paintings called PATTERNS. In this series, I painted small squares in various geometric patterns, using mostly primary colors on a white ground. This series was followed by a series of WEAVING PATTERNS, acrylic paintings on a black ground, in which I used both primary and secondary colors. The WEAVING PATTERNS series was designed to show, by means of small painted squares, the patterns that result when threads of different colors are woven together.
The TRANSITIONS series, which followed these two series, was more inclusive. Through the use of the ancient art of stenciling, this series utilized a broad color palette in smooth transitions from one color to the next.
Like its predecessor TRANSITIONS, the series FADE-OUT utilizes both primary and secondary colors on a black ground. FADE-OUT is designed to express the phenomenon of fading out. By use of the ancient art of stenciling, each of the six works in this series presents a cluster of brightly colored shapes at the center of the painting, and shows the color fading away as it becomes more distant from the center. As in life itself, our memory of things that were once sharply defined fades out.
